Is It Possible To Stop Ice Expanding ?
« on: 10/06/2009 00:35:33 »
Darlings,

As a sheepy I of course love nothing more than to lay back, put on some Star Trek TNG and sip an ice cold mint julep**...

To achieve the required temperature of the mint julep I employ the use of ice !

look..here's some !

Nice !!......kewl !!

Ice is like...well cold and it's my all time favourite stuff made from frozen water !

As ewe may or may not know ice expands.....and I hear it's a pretty strong force !

I have three questions !

Is water the only liquid that expands when frozen ?

Are there any solids that expand when frozen ?

Is it possible to stop ice expanding ?

Ewe see...I just do not know !!....Please tell me ..so that I can know stuff !

Hugs & Shmishes

mwah mwah mwah !!

I have no idea what a mint julep is!..for some reason I relate it to the southern united States !

Do I get  brownie Smart-Alec points for pointing out that the above “ice” cubes are fake (plastic props) ...

(Telltale signs: they don't have any bubbles in and are identically irregular).

I know that gallium expands on freezing.

I thought there was a reason they were not melting !...yes..yes of course...20 'Smart-Alec points have been credited to your account. Spend them wisely....as soon as you reach only 1000 , ewe will receive a real ice cube in the post.  ;)

Thanks Chemistry4me,

Does gallium make nice ice cubes ?..erhmm...or is it only frozen water that is called ice ?...so..this begs the question is frozen gallium called something else beside ' frozen gallium' ?

I think you'll just call it gallium metal.

Occasionally I have put a beer in the freezer (because for some crazy reason we like our beer cold) and forgotten about it and it has expanded so much that it popped the top and I had beer flavoured peas for weeks.
I believe we need to start talking about electrons and poles and stuff I don't really know much about to get to the bottom of this expanding ice of which you speak. It has something to do with the hydrogen and oxygen creating a magnetic dipole.

That's all I got...

A very good URL is...

www.benbest.com/cryonics/pressure.html#ice

The pressure from expanding ice is enormous but not infinite, so you certainly can stop ice expanding. In fact with a strong enough counter pressure you can effectively lower the freezing point and force it to remain in water form to a lower temperature. When it does freeze it creates other crystal forms of which 13 are known so far. I didn't know this until Neil asked this and stimulated a little web research. Thanks, Neil, it's a fascinating subject.
