Hello? I'm back.

Hello?

Hello?

Bloody typical. I've come back from work and everyone's crept off while I wasn't looking. Do I need to change my deodorant? You've not even left me any unsolved puzzles to do.

Hahaha. That's very funny. I wish I'd thought of that!

Here you go John,

There are three boxes. One is labeled "Apples" another is labeled "Oranges". The last one is labeled "Apples and Oranges". You know that each is box labeled incorrectly. You may ask me to pick one fruit from one box.

How can you label all the boxes correctly?

Hello Variolla

What's with the 'human flora' link? I do hope that wasn't a reference to me needing to change my deodorant!

I'm thinking about the three boxes puzzle. I'll have the answer in a jiffy. Possibly.

Right. The box marked 'apples and pears' must have just one variety, so whatever comes out of that box is what it contains.

If the two fruits pulled from the other boxes are both the same I don't know how to tell which box is mixed.

I've got half of it. I'll think some more.

You have got half of it, although it is oranges not pears!!

Would the fruits out of the other two boxes be the same? Given the selection of labels you have?

Right, it's easy.

One box is marked 'bananas and grapes' and contains just grapes. So there's only two options left. The box that is marked 'grapes' must therefore be the only other option, 'mixed'. And the last box has to be the coconuts, cos that's all that's left. Yes? So where were the oranges again?

Pretty much!!! :)

Aside from you changing the fruit.... :P

Ok the box marked 'apples and oranges' must only have one type of fruit in it, because it is incorrectly labelled. Therefore if you pull an orange out of it, you label it 'Oranges'.Then change the Oranges box to Apples, and the Apples box to 'Apples and Oranges'.

I think!  ;D

No, hang on. If the box marked 'apples and oranges' contained oranges I would label it 'oranges'. So far, so good.

But why change the 'oranges' box to 'apples'? How do you know it's not mixed? Especially if you can pull an apple out of either.

I thought I had the answer before. But it was just teasing me!

It's nearly midnight. Maybe this will seem obvious in the morning. But when the likes of BenV come on line and see the mess we've made of this puzzle I will have to commit hari kari.  [xx(]

Apples, oranges, pears, grapes, bananas???? What's this, a fruit salad question?

The mango & kiwi box is labeled wrong, so what you pull out is the only fruit in it (say mango).

From the remaining boxes, one marked mango and the other marked kiwi, you pull one fruit each.

From the box marked kiwi, you pull out a kiwi, this box is therefore marked wrong and must be the mixed box.
Or from the box marked kiwi, you pull out a mango, this box must must be either the mango or mixed box.
From the box marked mango, you pull out a mango,

Hold on, am I getting anywhere here??? Oh bugger, I prefer plums anyway!

How can you label all the boxes correctly?

Since you can pick only 1 fruit in total, here's how to do it:
You first take a fruit from the box labeled as mixed.
Let's say you pull out an apple.
Now you know that Mixed -> Apples

Now you also know for sure that Apples -> Orange and Oranges -> Mixed since all boxes were labeled incorrectly, and if Apples were mixed, the box Oranges would be labeled correctly

Imagine a closed Room with no windows and 1 non-transparent door.
In the middle of the room is a light bulb hanging from the ceiling.
On the outside of the room, somewhere where you can't see the door, there are three light switches.
Only one switch is connected to the light.
Your assignment is to determine which switch controls the light, but you can enter the room only once. Once in the room you have to tell which switch controls the light before exiting the room again.

How would you know for sure which switch controls the light

Does the scenario start with all switches in the 'off' position?

Is the bulb an old, incandescent type, ie one that gets hot?

If so, I may have figured it out.

thats exactly what I am thinking of, I've done it in my 7th standard but that was about 3 bulbs. but I too think that the answer is related to the swtch being hot or something :-\

Right. I reckon I've got it.

Bulb starts off and cold. Flick one switch for 60 seconds, then off. Flick second switch on for 60 seconds, then off. Flick third switch on and enter room. Bulb will either be slightly warm, very warm or on. This corresponds with first, second and third bilb respectively.
