Well C4, are you going to buy that 4 wheel drive,  Toyota Land Cruiser to get around the city now? It has great mileage - 13 MPG!

N.Z. Oil Output Rises for First Time Since 2007 on OMVís Field

By Gavin Evans

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- New Zealand oil production increased for the first time since 2007 in the first quarter as OMV AG, central Europeís biggest oil company, started deliveries from its offshore Maari field.

Crude oil, condensate and naphtha output rose to the equivalent of 4.27 million barrels of oil, up 0.3 percent from the fourth quarter, the Ministry of Economic Development said today. Maari started output in late February and produced 420,000 barrels in the quarter, helping to offset declines at the Australian Worldwide Exploration Ltd.-led Tui field.

Maari, 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the Taranaki coast, is Vienna-based OMVís first offshore project as an operator. Tui and Maari, drilled in 2007, are New Zealandís first offshore oil projects since the Maui development in 1996.

Production in the quarter fell 27 percent from the same period a year earlier, reflecting Tuiís decline, the report said. Tui produced about a third less than six months earlier, the ministry said without being more specific.

New Zealandís oil output rose to a record 21.6 million barrels last year, 45 percent higher than 2007 and about 6 percent higher than the previous record in 1997.

NZ will be self sufficient in energy when the sun goes red giant.

I agree BC - C4 is just wishing and as a poor chemist he probably needs to feed his cookie habit.

NZ could become energy self sufficient by attaching pipes to all the sheep's bums' to collect millions of liters of methane to run their electricity generation plants. This could also save the planet from climate change.

You're right, roughly 50% of NZ's greenhouse gases comes from the livestock!

I do. The last boneless leg of lamb I bought was from NZ - was quite good. Rather expensive, thought. Don't do it often.

Doesn't NZ have a considerable (potential) geothermal resource?

Yup, we have geothermal power, wind power and hydropower (from dams). I can't wait until we make use of those lovely tidal generators that are like wind turbines but for underwater. Cook Staight is deep enough for them, and maybe we won't have those good for nothing people moaning about them being an eyesore in the same breath as worrying about climate change. But then I suppose they'll worry about the effects on the undersea life... better we just stick to cooking the earth aye?!!!

It is the logical course - unless the English activist who banned knives and prevented a teenager from purchasing a pzzza cutter get into the act.

I don't understand why New Zealand is putting so little thought into researching it, especially considering we are surrounded by water! It would be a great way to use our natural resources, and aparently they're more efficient than wind turbines because of the increased density of the water compared to air. And power is quite expensive here at the moment too; it really couldn't come quick enough.

There are a couple of problems. I did a bit of work for Kyushu Electric Power back when I was much younger. There were a couple of significant problems in getting the plant set up - NOT including the geological problems of fracturing of overlying rocks preventing good sealing of the source, multiple pathways for hydrological movement - on and on.

The heat makes drilling and completion of a source well a technically challenging operation.

Corrosion and associated aerobic poisons make a very tough nut to crack. Most often there are large amounts of corrosive/poisonous gas associated with or dissolved in the hydrological regime. If the pressure is released --- well look out. In fact - RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!!

And if the worst doesn't happen, the corrosion can shut you down 365 days a year. This water is highly corrosive even with cathodic protection on your pipes.

Hydrothermal is more expensive by far than conventional sources.

Boy, am I glad to see you!

Is this person a shill, C4?

Hi Laura - I cannot help but give the disadvantaged an even more difficult time

O an d I bought a boneless leg of lamb this weekend from NZ - IT WAS OFF! Refrigeration seemed to have been broken when it was being shipped.

Well, it's the Aussie's that claim the achievement of refridgerated shipping (load of dung really), so they can answer for that one.
And I suppose the only thing to do until refridgerated shipping is back up and running, is to come and live in our wonderful country. We never get off lamb here, unless you leave it for ages in a warm place. We certainly could do with more people too.  :)
