« on: 23/06/2003 01:07:08 »
I would like to know whether Chinese garlic has any medical effects on the famous disease SARS?

Thanks

I've been told to eat plenty of galic every time when spring comes because that could protect you from flu.I don't really understand why,I guess might be some chemicals contained in garlic will be albe to kill bacteria.[?]

There are some claims that garlic-derivatives (possibly the allicin) can inhibit herpes viruses and hence can help to promote healing of cold sores.

Qing: I think the reason of your question is that because Chinese garlic has a special "odor" created by a specific kind of chemicals in it.

If the chemicals create the odor, and give it the medicinal value, it would seem that when you alter the chemical composition to remove the odor, maybe it doesn't work as well medicinally either.  And does it have to be Chinese garlic specifically, or can it be any kind of garlic?  I always thought it kept you from getting the flu by keeping everyone away from you cause you smelled so bad.  No?

Garlic that I am a big fan of does have an odor and that can be a problem.   As I understand if you want to neutralize the odor causing agents in it, it would behoove you to consume lots of parsley as the chlorophyll helps neutralized it.   Perhaps, you can also consume a garlic wine vinegar as well where you put several cloves garlic in vinegar that has been boiled and then put it in a container. Then you can drink that.

We made some fantastic garlic olive oil a couple of years back by adding about 10 cloves of garlic to a small bottle of olive oil, together with about 5 chillis, peppercorns and rosemary. The result was fantastic. We were even spreading it on toast instead of butter or margarine.

I don't think there is any robust evidence for a protective effect of garlic against heart disease or the common cold. What I do believe is that people who tend to eat a lot of garlic probably also eat a diet rich in fruit and fresh vegetables which are known to reduce your risk of high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease. That said there is some evidence that constituents of garlic might be beneficial in herpes infections. And the point made by bezoar above that garlic keeps other possible sources of 'contagion' away is unarguably true !

Garlic works wonders against bacterial life forms.
But we shouldn't overlook some important
attributes of E. purpurea which has been clinically
proven to increase white blood cells, spleen cells,
the activation and competency for phagocytosis by
human granulocytes, the production of autocrine
regulators (hormonal molecules produced and
secreted within organs or tissues), and most notably
the reproduction of T helper cells (T helper cells are
diminished substantially in AIDS victims) and T helper
cells also directly regulate the level of T and B cell
lymphocytes in the immune reponse

I really don't know what you're talking about - sorry !

Incidentally, T helper cells are lymphocytes, and are more correctly referred to as CD4 cells.

I am looking for garlic products that do not cause bad breath.  What do you recommend?  I heard the powder form is useless. Is this true?[?]

Odourless garlic capsules are widely available in any health store/chemist/pharmacy.........I've taken them before and they're great...no garlic breath at all......don't know where you are but here's a link to a UK supplier  http://www.wassen.com/nutrition-vitamins/nutritional-supplements-Garlic.htm

I found that aged garlic is perhaps the best form for getting all the goodness from garlic without bad breath. Is this true? What do you think about the pills or the extracts?

What about onions? I think they sort of reduce the chance of getting the flu, and they also have the odor. may be it is the chemical that causes the odor, acting as an anti bacterial or anti viral agent.
