WHY CAN I WALK BETTER BACKWARDS THAN FORWARDS?

Because you're back-to-front.

I mourn for poor charlie,
who just for a stunt.
Went out with his overcoat
on back-to-front.
Whilst crossing the road a big car knocked him down.
He'd be living today but they turned his head round.

I hope this helps your walking problem!

this would have been good information to provide in your first post.

This section is for a bit of light-hearted banter, (as opposed to the rest of the forum which starts serious then dissolves into light-hearted banter and terrible terrible puns)

It would be interesting to see if other people with Parkinsons can walk better backwards.. it's possible that your forward walking has degraded so much that walking backwards is easier.. are you in a chair yet?  do you have other outwards symptoms?

PS using all capitals is akin to shouting on forums...

As JnA has suggested, had you posted "I have Parkinson's disease, so why can I walk better backwards than forwards?" in the Physiology & Medicine section of the forum, you would have got serious replies.

Nobody here wishes to make light of your condition.

PARKINSONS DISEASE- I Wonder Why I Can Walk Better Backwards !
Hi.  Saw this post a while back and was fascinated by it.  Wish I had the time to look into this, but seriously have you discussed this with your neuro?

Am so rusty on all things medical, so take my random ideas in this light.  As far as I can remember a major problem of Parkinsons is initiating movement.  Maybe by walking backwards you are tricking this mechanism, in that you are, I assume, looking forward to where you seem to intend to walk but then start moving backwards, making the intention hesitancy defect confused, if that makes sense.  Would be interesting if this continues or your nervous system gets wise to the trick and it stops working.  Hope not.

Another reason may be to do with your gait.  If you have any sort of difficulty causing you to shuffle, eg foot drop, it is probably easier to drag the wayward foot backward rather than forwards.  Would try this out, but have a broken leg right now!

Stupid question, but have you, in a safe area, tried walking forwards with your eyes closed.  Just wandering if that improves things, by again cutting out the intention dilemma.
Now you please please have to forgive me if this is all bunkum, but at least am taking it seriously!

You may well be onto something here. I would get onto some Parkinsons support groups and pose the same question.

I sincerely wish you strength and finding any technique that works with your condition.

Am not the brightest penny here, but I do care.
