Carbon Dioxide....it fizzes my tongue...why ?
« on: 02/08/2005 03:55:54 »
Hello Folks of a Scholary Nature,

I just had a Sprite !..oh joy !!...nice with ice !

It's well fizzy with copious quantities of Carbon Dioxide.

I want to know why it tingles so much on my tongue ?..

.....it's a sensation of prickly needles dancing away !...almost painful but strangely unique and pleasent.....

So why does it feel like this ?

...also..if such a substance as a beverage like lemonade and cola is saturated with Carbon Dioxide, why doesn't the gas just explode out of it in one go ?...why is it a gradual process ?

For some reason I want to know this.

Effervesce me with a sparkling answer of bubbly joy.

Ta

I am sure there is a more 'technical' answer to this but hey.

The sprite has carbon dioxide in it yes. So when the drops of sprite fall on your tongue the carbon dioxide explodes.... wow

And that is why you get your tingling sensation.

Please tell me if I am wrong and I am sure people can add more to that coz i know it isnt very "sciency"

That's fine Simon...that's My level you're on there !!..thanks for the answer....sounds plausible ...I'm still hoping a passing carbon dioxide-upon-tongue expert gives us the full answer though.

cheers

Close enough, the carbon dioxide is actually tied up with a water molocule to form weak Carbolic Acid H2CO3. When you release pressure or some other catalyst, the CO2 comes loose and "explodes" or fizzes in your mouth.

Cave formations are formed from this process. Plant life decays forming CO2 which is dissolved in water percolating though the rock. The acid dissolves the dolimite (limestone) rock (mostly Calcium Oxide), then when it drips out into the cave proper where the partial pressure of the CO2 is lower, the gase is released, and the acid is no longer an acid and drops the calcium as a stagtite or a stalagmite, or flow stone.

And yes, my NSS number is in the 7000's - long time member.

....and this explosive reaction must work in tandem with the sensitivity on the tongue eh ?.....thanks David and well done Simon.....
