Should the ivory trade be banned?
« on: 23/07/2009 14:26:37 »
You may not realise, that the total ban on the trade of ivory was lifted in 1997.

The ban of trade in ivory in 1989, led to a price crash in Europe and the USA. But in 1997 CITES allowed the sale of 60 tons of ivory from Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to Japan.

From 1998 to 2002, Born Free estimate that 90 tons of illegal ivory has been confiscated by customs, that's 13,000 elephants slaughtered by poachers. And that's only the ivory which was found, how much more slips past unseen?

Just a few days ago, Kenyan customs seized 300kgs of ivory and black rhino horn destined for Asia.

Everyone seems to be in agreement, that the legal allowance is driving the illegal poaching, and that a full ban must be reintroduced to put an end to the carnage of these magnificent beasts.

If you would like to help, please follow this link to sign a petition to CITES Secretary-General Willem Wijnstekers, to reintroduce a permanent ivory trade ban.

Absolutely...but the petition went to a site for banning tortoises.  Do they have more than one petition on the site?
