Why 10cm for cervix Dilation ?
« on: 25/08/2005 02:54:47 »
More Baby related questioning.

Even though there are big babies and small babies, does the cervix dilate to beyond 10cm ?....10cm is the magic width isn't it ? that the cervix dilates to during childbirth.

Are there babies born conventionally where the cervix has not dilated to 10cm ?

Ok, I need a drink, perhaps some juice...diluted of course !

No, it's just the maximum extent to which the cervix dilates. When you examine someone in labour you can feel the degree of dilation of the cervix because you can feel the baby's head bulging through the aperture. The cervix 'opens' by dissolving its internal structure and stretching out to form a thin rim. Once all of the cervical tissue is taken up it reaches maximum dilation at about 10 cm
