Diamonds are well hard aren't they ?
« on: 27/08/2005 22:23:48 »
I wouldn't want to meet an angry diamond in a dark alley one night, because it's so hard !!..

Diamonds are the hardest Natural substance known (so far)...but how hard can something be ?...how much harder than diamonds have we been able to make things ?...and is there a limit to ' hardness ' ?

Sugar Coat your comments for me as I can't take the hard stuff.

Diamonds are still used on high performance drill bits and cutting disks so I'm guessing there isn't anything much harder - or if there is it's more expensive than diamond dust!

Thanks Simmer....though I'm sure there are artificial harder substances....lets hope a passing ' hard substance ' expert passes....thanks

im sure this topic came up a couple of months ago and some hardness expert did say there were two or three man made materials that were harder if i knew how to look up and link to old topics i would be more specific sorry

Thanks Chris....I just did a quick search and the only result was this thread !!..Oh well...perhaps it was mentioned in another thread with a different topic altogether.....well, lets just see if the ' hardness' expert passes by on his way back !!

cheers

The only substance I know of was developed by GE in the 1960's(?)- called "borazon", made of interlocking boron amd nitrogen atoms.

Thats ok mate.

I thought i would give you something to read in the early hours.
Here's a little extra
----------
Ray Baughman's group from the NanoTech Institute at University of Texas at Dallas produced the current toughest material known in mid-2003 by spinning fibers of single wall carbon nanotubes with polyvinyl alcohol. Beating the previous contender, spider silk, by a factor of four, the fibers require 600J/g to break. In comparison, the bullet-resistant fiber Kevlar is 27-33J/g. In mid-2005 Baughman and co-workers from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization developed a method for producing transparent carbon nanotube sheets 1/1000th the thickness of a human hair capable of supporting 50,000 times their own mass.

Everyday we learn something new. Imagine how clever we will be in ten years time.

See you on Mastermind

Sounds like tensile strength rather than hardness.

Until this well hard expert turns up, this article

http://www.afrlhorizons.com/Briefs/0009/OSR0002.html

talks about a new superhard crystalline material developed at Arlington that is second only to diamondin hardness! So maybe diamonds are still the meanest material on the block. :)

Diamond is a BBC or Body Centered Cubic structure of carbon. As such you have a very small atom with 4 covalent bonds. The inner electrons are more strongly bonded to the nucelus than larger atoms, and with the tight bonding to the 4 nearest neighbors, you produce a very strong and hard material. Yes it can be split on crystaline planes. But there cannot be any other substance harder as there is no way to have more than 4 covalent bonds, and carbon is the smallest atom that can do so, even though it is not a natural bonding (requires extreme pressure/heat to achieve).

Someone did come up with a computer model of a carbon nitrogen compound that is slightly harder than diamond and according to:
http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/superhard-materials.html

they managed to make it. I guess it is far harder to make than diamond so not worth it.

although according to:
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/308/5726/1268
it didn't work as I seem to remember they forgot about a means of deformation so it wasn't as good as diamond...

It is conceivable that you could slightly alter diamond to make something a bit harder, but I doubt you are going to get very far.

The carbon nanotube material was very tough not hard - toughness is the ability of a material to absorb energy without breaking - a hammer made out of diamond although very hard and very strong would be useless as it is not as tough as steel so if you hit something else quite hard with it, it would shatter as it is brittle.

What facinating comments..thank you all. Gosh !!..Diamonds are well hard !

In contrast to the hardness scale...is there also a most softest substance too ?

Do you mean softest solid mineral? That would usually be talc. Of course there are softer materials, such as rubbers and plastics, and you have even softer liquids and gasses. I suppose, the ultimate softest "substance" is a vacuum.

Thank you Gsmollin Sir....can I say the softest of each of those materials you've mentioned ?.....I never realised my Hoover was so soft ! (droll !!...exceedingly dull and droll joke !)

Talic is the usual material mentioned at a hardness of 2. Of course we are talking minerals here, and there are loads of things softer than that. Ah have I mentioned girls?

Yep !..That's  finished it alright.

one final question ....is it possible to melt Diamond ?..has anyone ever done it ?

...well..that's two questions then.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

whats the melting point of a nanotube or nanorod:)

How to melt a diamond.

It can be done but a diamond has got the highest melting point of everything i think.

you need a tempareture of 4000 Kelvin

Thats well hot as well as well hard

but then again if a diamond has got the highest melting point of all materials, wouldnt the thing your trying to melt your diamond in melt before your diamond.
