having a friendship is a bit like feeling pain, or being in love. it's a feeling - you can use words to describe what it's like, but you are only going to capture a small aspect of everything you feel unless you go into real depth with it, and that takes time. friendship is a broad term in my experience. there are some friends in my life i never need to see to know that they'll be there for me if i have something to talk to them about, there are some that are fleeting, just happen in a relatively small period of time. there is this girl i knew in college when studying - she was great, and we had a laugh together, but there wasn't that feeling of.. cohesion and understanding you get with longer term friends. that comes after spending a lot of time together. it's a very satisfying experience having a friend, but it's equally satisfying in a different way feeling that anyone can be your friend if you approach them in the right way :)

they are useful, but that's not their main function. it's certainly not mandatory to have friends in your life, but the health benefits are definitely positive if you have a good social life.

the best way to think about it if you don't feel like you belong is to recognise that all other people around you are essentially the same. we might differ in skin colour, culture, or even attitudes and values, but there is one basic fact to humans that unites us: we are all humans. we all want to be happy and hate pain. i find focusing on that fact very useful if i want to approach a stranger, and it's helpful in overcoming any fears about approaching them. it makes me feel like i am just like them, like i am meeting someone who is part of my family.

why have you never had a friend in your life?

All humans are not equal, not even two humans are equal to each other. Every single specimen is different. And in the same way YOU are also unique.

Having friends is not mandatory. If you don't feel like you're missing out on something, then don't make friends. If you do feel like you're missing out on something, then do make friends.
If you have trouble with making friends, then Internet is the way to go. If not, then go out to public places. Talk to people in the supermarket etc etc.

A friend of mine has this beautiful saying up against her living room wall.
It reads: "Every friend once was a stranger"

What a very nice post.

I have never considered my friends useful although they at times can offer you some incredible counsel when times are tough and even when times are great!

your thoughts don't need to match with anyone to have friends, though it can help if you find some common ground with people.

while thoughts are one defining feature of person, they are not the only feature. for example, you could say that if someone is thinking something, then that is what they want to do. i don't think that is true, for me at least. sometimes i will think bad things, but i don't act on them, or i will think "that was a stupid thing to think!". so there is more to a person than what you can see in their thoughts, or actions, or words. a human is a holistic package, and cannot be reduced to just one thing.

you don't know why?

have you reflected on qualities that you, yourself might have that would lead to you not having a friend? is it affecting you negatively, do you think?

hmm.. there is a lot of different ways of interpreting "equal". it seems to have eaten many words.

if i said men and women are equal, i would be lying because i do not believe this. however, i do believe that men and women are of equal potential value, even if they are not of equal value to society, to companies, to their kids. you cannot argue that a woman who is a good doctor and a good mom is of less value to society than a woman who sits in her house doing little all day. you can argue that they deserve the same base line respect and compassion, and that level should be very high, because this enables her to reach her own potential - which may be a cleaner, or the president of the united states. that is unimportant to me. what is important is that she is happy with what she does because she recognises she is part of a system that helps people. so in this way, there is difference but also not difference. it depends on the context in which you judge them.

and thank you karen :)

You are learning to speak to and communicate to other people here in the forum and when you do this other people get to know you and your ideas and you learn about them. When you begin to like to share time with these people and they in turn enjoy sharing time talking with you and they begin to like spending time learning about you then that starts the basis of friendship.. where two or more people begin to enjoy and share conversation and companionship with one another. Learning about each other and anothers opinions and you them...and this does not mean you agree with one another but respect each other enough to allow them their opinion.. in this begins a learning you receive from each other and a joining of friendship.. perhaps like in here, you begin to enjoy posting here as there is a nice group of people to converse and share your ideas with.

You need to speak to the Moderator who sent you a message

and perhaps he can better explain why your post was

deleted..

So it is nice that you have a sister and brother. What do

you mean when you say they don't understand you?

Do you use a translator to post here or do you speak

English well your self?

Can you tell me some more about yourself?

I come from a Large family I have had 6 other siblings..4

sisters and two brothers and myself. I am the middle child

and was often misunderstood as a child.

I have followed your posts and understand you did not like friendship day and from what I read you may have been close to another person who you trusted who lost your trust and now you do not like friendships.

That is not the situation in all friendships although it is sad when one feels  That hurt from a friends behavior!
