2012 meteor to destroy the earth?
« on: 15/09/2009 22:47:50 »
Sorry for the drama.  I am wondering.  I have heard that there is a large meteor on track to pass so close to the earth that it will move between the Earth's surface and out lowest satelites.  And that if it were to hit, it is large enough to wipe out life on this planet.  This is all supposed to coincide with the end of the Mayan calenday and some writings by Nostradomas in the year 2012.  Is there any truth to this?

No, it won't. The gravitational curvature is not strong enough to direct it exactly to earth, though it will miss us not much shorter than the earths natural satallite. If anything, it [[may]] hit the moon.

There are many theories... I think the most viable is that we could undergo a magnetic field shift. But that it would cause an "apocalypse" is highly questionable.

No. That is just ridicilous. Magnetic shifts from (such a small - which it is) cosmos object is not reasonable or suffice to exchange differences in a larger object, such as the earth. If this where the case you gave, the moon would give us that apocalyptic result many times over.

It's quite normal for people to expect the end of the world to come with the end of a calendar. But they forget that time is a human construction and therefore calendars can continue.
As for Nostradamus.. to date no-one has accurately disassembled the quatrains *before* and event.. it's always hindsight, and we humans are good at finding patterns.

I think you must be thinking of Eros, which is expected to pass within 0.179AU of Earth on 2012-01-31.  0.179AU is 16-17 million miles though, so it'll be well outside the orbit of the Moon.

Apophis, as the article points out, is expected to come much closer, but that's in 2029.

No it's all true,  the world will end on Dec 12th 2012 and this is the real reason why!!

1.   I'm 41, 2days later thats just sad.
2.   I can't take another xmas.

So I'm going to hack into Norad ( not hard Bush's password is in effect still  "1234" shhhhhh ) and launch all of the nukes!!

Anything is better than suffering another Xmas so here is hoping :)

* yes it's totally ridiculous *

So if it hits a 1tonne MAX Sattelite this 200Bil Tonne object is going to have it's orbit altered enough to make it hit earth on it's next pass,  hmmmmmmmmmmmmm  nope I don't think it'll care in the slightest.

And 320metres wide and 200Bil Tonnes yeah okay.

I think we can consider the news article to be hugely bogus!!

nonsense. This incident is not going to happen. Life has exist on earth for million of years. Nothing such thing has happened over a long period of time. And nothing will happen in the future.

You what I find ridicolous, that people are just so scared to accept that fate is going to smash us to pieces. I'll remain neutral on the subject, cause I don't particularly care, and while I'm at it - if I'm right, then I'll have something to rub in your faces!

I really can't wait till its doomsday I want to see the news hype so bad!!! I wonder how many people will suicide?

Yes, that sounds like a very neutral position.

What a thoroughly unpleasant comment.

It is unpleasant I know that... but unfortunantely it will happen. It was like with the hadron collider.

Of course I think lets stop it there. I don't like the topic very much

The German newspaper article doesn't make sense. It has a 200-billion tonnes object being deflected by a satellite? That's like a car crashing because a mosquito hits the windshield (or should I say windscreen).

I understand that a nudge can make a big difference over time, but a 200 billion tonnes object colliding with a satellite in the ton range is not like setting off a nuke on the asteroid.
This is a matter of force, F=ma. I don't believe that anyone can determine the claimed effect in the article. The satellite is less than 10^11 the weight of the asteroid. The effect is going to be in the range of 10^(-11). Ther eis no way anyone today can compute orbits out 11 digits of precision!

If the asteroid strikes a satellite in 2029, that will change its trajectory and make it hit the Earth on its next orbit in 2036.

This is the claim I am talking about. I think it is nonsense to claim that an effect in the 11th digit of precision can be carried forward with any degree of accuracy.

Think about it. What few things in science can be determined out 11 digits?
