It's a name for everything that's alive, but not visible to the human eye.
You'll need a microscope to observe microorganisms.

Some examples are: bacteria, viruses, amoeba, algae, fungi, ...
All these microorganisms are invisible to the human eye as a single specimen. Colonies of forementioned species are visible however.
