How do you become lactose intolerant?
« on: 05/11/2009 03:41:00 »
We all can digest lactose, the sugar in milk and dairy, when we're born, but some of us lose that ability later in life.  If a person is born with the ability to make the lactase enzyme, how can the cells "forget" how to make it later on?

hm, it's not really that they forget. it's more like, a lack of production arises I suppose. The best anology would be diabetes. cells in the pancreas don't suddenly forget how to, it's that they start producing less, same thing with lactase. it's not stopped but less is produced, resulting in lactose intolerance

Yeah, it's sort of like the use it or lose it type thing, haha. Though, I'm asian, and I'm not lactose intolerant (at least not yet!). It's probably because I've been drinking a lot of milk since forever.  :D
