Why is the system clock running slow?
« on: 05/11/2009 15:26:24 »
Apologies if this has been asked before  (I did search but it did not turn up anything useful)

An old PC running windows 2000 is losing time - I suspect it is the cmos battery but have not had any boot errors/ failures.

What other reasons / solutions are there (I would rather avoid pulling the whole thing apart!)

Windows time service ? ...

If the target time is behind local time, the local clock is slowed (slewed) until the two times are aligned,
unless local time is more than 3 minutes out of synchronization, in which case the time is immediately set.

The real time clock (rtc) that handles things like the date and time and which are built into most computer motherboards aren't particularly accurate and need to be regularly reset or synchronised with accurate time sources.  A failing battery won't slow the clock down but will probably just cause it to forget it's current date and time settings when the computer is powered off.

If the clock just drifts a few seconds or minutes each day then it's just due to the poor quality of the clock and you should look at the Windows Time Service, as RD suggests.  This allows the rtc to synchronise itself to accurate time sources available on the web.  However, if it keeps resetting itself, usually to the first of January, 1970, when you power the computer up then the battery may be shot.
