I picked up a heavy suitcase and went 'grrrr', why#~??

because the contraction of your abdominal (and other torso-)muscles pushes a bit against your lungs, which makes air escape. This air passes your vocal cords and throat and since the muscles present there are also contracting, you'll produce a specific grunting sound.
