Why Do I See Stars/Lights When I Yawn ?
« on: 30/11/2009 20:58:48 »
I am posting this on behalf of Deana who really wants to know this.

Deana says:

It happens every day when I yawn, stretch, turn over in bed, and I sometimes see the lights when I bend down or walk from a light room into a darker one. It doesn't happen EVERY time, but it does occur at least once a day. It sometimes happens when I cough or blow my nose too...I had a terrible cold last month, and it happened every single time! It was really annoying!

whajafink folks ?

Can we give Deana an explanation ?

It's the pressure in your blood vessels when you yawn.

As a self-experiment, you could mould into your eyes the palms of your fist (but not too strong) and you will see bright-ish lights, depending specifically on how sensitive your nervous system is. When you yawn you also apply the same pressure by closing your eyes, so the colors you observe is a pressure interpreted by brain.

Thank Ewe Mr. Scientist. I used to enjoy doing the self experiment until someone told me to be very careful, so I stopped my eye pressing hobby !....but would that also explain for when Deana turns over in bed or walks from a light room to a dark room ? I can certainly understand the coughing and sneezing though. I had an inkling it was ' pressure ' but thought it best to get a klevur persons opinion.

I have given Deana the link to this thread so hopefully Deana will read it.

thanks again.

.... I sometimes see the lights when I bend down or walk from a light room into a darker one.

It's known as the blue field entoptic phenomenon or Scheerer's phenomenon :

(Tip: try not to bend down too often or you will keep seeing stars up your arse.)

Hmmm! That could explain Michael Barrymore.

Edited by me. Best not say that.

I shook hands with him once. He was outside Westminster Abbey at the time of Princess Diana's funeral. I've washed my hands off him now as an entertainer.

Don't hurt yourself while doing this, but you can close you eyes and, with a fingertip, "gently" push against the upper eyelid at the outer corner of your eyeball (near the bone), and you might "see" the image of your fingertip where you'd normally see the bridge of your nose. Wiggle your fingertip a little, and the "image" will move.

Alternatively, if the missus gets angry and thumps you in the eye you might see an image of a fist a fraction of a second before you see stars.
