Why Can Horses Only See Blues & Greens?
« on: 04/12/2009 13:22:05 »
Dearest Peeps Of cross-disciplinary-devoted-to-studiesologists,

As a sheepie I of course luff horses. Horses are my all time favourite equine orientated animal that French people eat !

Little did the Osmonds know that when they had their hit Crazy Horses back in 1972 that this question about horsey vision would be asked 27 years later !..If only they had the benefit of hindsight eh ?  ::)

Anyway, I did not know this until a few moments ago but it seems that Gerald here.......

Gerald Is A Crazy Horse

....can really only see in blues and greens !!..why's that then ?....why can't Gerald see the same colours as ewe and I ?....what does a rainbow look like to Gerald and then how can he sort out the pink smarties (M &Ms) from a pack ?

What kind of evolutionary circumstance led to Gerald only seeing in those two hues ?

I imagine a blue sky above a green field must look pretty spectacular to Gerald !

whajafink ?

hugs and shmishes

mwah mwah mwah !!

Neil
Horsey, Horsey don't you stop
Just let your feet go clipity clop
Your tail goes swish and the wheels go round
Giddy up we're homeward bound.

It's so they can tell the sky from the ground; otherwise they might walk round the wrong way up.

Gerald doesn't see red coz he can't climb trees.

Red vision is advantageous for spotting nutritious ripe fruits and berries, but only if you can reach them.

The evolution of trichromatic color vision in primates occurred as the ancestors of modern monkeys, apes, and humans switched to diurnal (daytime) activity and began consuming fruits and leaves from flowering plants.
