Mark Luddington  asked the Naked Scientists:

Dear Chris

I have had appendicitis, all be it 27 years ago; what I would like to know is what causes this condition, and what contributes to all the pain and discomfort that is associated with appendicitis?

Also what purpose does the Appendix serve within the human body?

I hope that you can answer my questions for me.

Kind Regards
Mark Luddington

What do you think?

Appendicitis simply means an inflammation of the appendix. The reason for having one was recently suggested to be a way of reestablishing the fauna that live inside our guts. I recall reading about this within the last year.

I agree with stereologist. I also learned that because of the position of the appendix, it is prone to getting bunged up with seeds and nuts and the sorts which is often the cause leading to the potentially fatal infection...could be wrong though.
