Do scientists live longer?

Justin Gmail  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Dr. Chris and crew,

I love the show and I've downloaded the entire catalogue in iTunes.  I'm newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive] on my commute in chronological order so please forgive me if my questions have been answered already -

Since scientists and doctors know so much about chemistry and anatomy and things, is there any data that shows if they live longer or healthier than most people?  You'd think they would, since they know what to do and what to stay away from.

Thanks again and keep up the newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive]!  I feel smarter for having newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive]

Justin in New Hampshire, USA

What do you think?

Anybody that can extend their life-time is a true scientist. But not all people that call themselves scientists live to a ripe old age. Do you get my point.................?

Not unless there is a time machine which acts non-asymptotically with the rest of us :)

“According to Kevin Kenward of the American Medical Association: ‘Based on over 210,000 records of deceased physicians, our data indicate the average life-span of a physician is 70.8 years.’” Using this data, chiropractors live 3 years longer than medical doctors.

Maybe it has something to do with Schrödinger's cat, the quantum mechanical cat's all seemed to have survived a long time:

de Broglie, 94. Born, 87. Heisenberg, 74. Schrödinger, 73. Bohr, 77. Planck, 89. Feynman, 69. Sommerfeld, 82. Zeeman, 78
That's an average of 80!

Sorry, third post in a row, but just to give you some more evidence. It's a bit old though
