how come our bodies made up of elements?
« on: 17/01/2010 13:36:56 »
omid's chemistry book says

"the debris from supernovae will eventually condense under the gravity of another star and form planets. thus the elements formed in the stars form the rocks, the seas and even our own bodies"

How come????????? :-\ :-\  :-\

and also it gives a table where it gives the %age of elements in human bodies.
if our body contains 18%carbon by mass then why we all are not as black as carbon?
And also why does these elements don't react in our bodies and form different compounds???? :-\ ???

Good point. It's sloppy writing in the textbook.
We are made up of compounds and those compounds are, in turn, made from elements that came from stars.

That doesn't answer omid's question :-\

Since we are made of compounds it isn't relevant that carbon, as an element, is usually black (diamonds aren't BTW).
Also since we are made from compounds, rather than elements, the elements have already reacted with one another.
