Can mammoths be recreated?

dr raj jeganathan asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Doctors ! Both Ask the Naked Scientists and the Naked Scientists are great podcasts. Makes my daily walk very interesting.

My question is on DNA. As I understand there are only small differences in the DNA of species and assuming that we can grow a species with DNA if not for now, atleast in the future.

Will it be possible to tweak a DNA for example of an elephant to get its predecessor Mammoth. May be we might even create an dinosaur from a bird (perish the thought)

What do you think?

And then we could use birds for the dinosaurs?
Imagine the stupefied daddy bird watching the mama bird laying that stupendous egg.

I'm pretty sure that would be the last time she ever allowed him close her..

I don't know but we have this joke in Swedish that I now will make an effort to translate into English.

"Do you know why the Mammoth's died out?"

"No"

"They run out of Papoth's."

It's kind of fun, in Swedish it is, at least?
