Is that a nutrition question or a physiological one? Is it actually possible to eat your belt? There would have to be a lot of chewing and saliva involved before you could actually get a piece off surely....then I would have to ask if the nutrition gained by eating your belt would exceed the energy consumed to perform the action??

Thanks jimmy Boy..what chemicals ?...I suppose if they behave themselves I won't mind them..hey..I'll even share a portion with them. Mr and Mrs Chemical are a very nice couple !

...seriously though, what chemicals might I expect in my biltong-like leather belt !

Thank ewe Doppler1...it's definitely a nutrition based question. Do ewe think there would be a way to prepare the belt to weigh the balance more in favour of my obtaining more energy from digesting than the using up of whilst consuming ?

The residents of Leningrad who survived the siege remember with reluctance what they had to eat in order to live another day. They ate anything edible… wood glue, boiled leather belts, and, in the summer time, grass.

Well Neilep....much to my own amazement,I am no expert at the very specialized culinary art of belt preparation but as far as improving the nutritional value is concerned, I would say that you should roll it up tightly after washing well, soak in a wine and garlic marinade and then stuff it inside a whole chicken or turkey. Once inside, cook in the oven for about 11/2 hours and then eat the wrapping. This should result in an excess of calories and result in the complete resolution of the midnight munchies drive. If you still feel like eating the belt then you will certainly have the energy required to make a good go of it. :)

In respect of Neilep I avoided refering to the lamb chop version of this recipe.

Don't ask me, ask the tanning industry - but I do know the dye is poisonous. My dad made leather-goods as a hobby and I distinctly remember the dye with the skull and crossbones he bought form Tandy Leather. (They were and American leather goods hobbyist retailer)

They used dog poop to remove the hair from cowhide too (and I'm really not kidding!)

AND one of the traditional chemicals in the tanning process urine. - Not kidding either

That us why no one wants to live near a tannery

I hear it is almost as bad as living near and indigo maker (woad processing)

I think the purple dye used by the Romans wasn't nice to make either.
Anyway a lot of leather these days is tanned with chrome compounds that are fairly toxic. You would need to be very hungry before it was worth the risk.
