Are cheap solar panels available yet?

Margaret asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi guys

we are very keen to install solar panels to generate electricity with photo-voltaic cells.

We heard some time ago, possibly on your show, that's new materials are becoming available that would make it much more efficient.

Are these materials available yet? If so, what are they? And are they being used in domestic systems?

We very much enjoy your show - one of the best! And What has Dr Chris been up to in recent weeks?

What do you think?

I don't think they are yet cheap enough. They may be cheap enough if you can get some
subsidies to buy them. What you can look into is solar thermal heating. If you get
sun light, this can pay off pretty quickly.
