Orange people
« on: 18/11/2005 23:28:49 »
I know this sounds flippant, but I mean it as a serious question...

What turned people like David Dickinson, Des O'Connor & Robert Kilroy-Idontlikethispoliticalpartyanymoresoimgonnastartanotherone orange? I've seen people after sunlamp sessions & they haven't turned orange.
It's obviously something to do with melanin, but why orange?

I don't know if you have ever met any ballroom dancers but I used to share a flat with one and before every competition he went decidedly orange as he applied all the fake tan, I don't know if this is the case with the celebrities too...

too much sun-from-a-bottle. The old kinds are notoriously orange, they're supposed to be more real-looking now. or maybe too much sunny D - that caused a girl to go very orange, but she was drinking 4 litres a day.

Neil - that has brought to mind another question. Nothing to do with science, though. Why do British people call them underpants? Surely, we should call then undertrousers! :D

Have you ever seen a parade of "orange men"? Quite popular in some parts of the UK.

Underpants - I like the word "chuddies"

so multi-cultural!

Corbeille - I refuse to get politico-religious on this site so I won't comment on the Orangemen.

Seems in fact Eth that the word ' underpants ' is rather quite apt .One might assume that the word ' pants ' is an Americanism. The word actually reaches as far back as the 4th century. Here for your awe, relish and indulgence is a brief history that i have blatantly copied and pasted for your delectation.

"One would not expect a word for a modern article of clothing to come ultimately from the name of a 4th-century Roman Catholic saint, but that is the case with the word pants. It can be traced back to Pantaleon, the patron saint of Venice. He became so closely associated with the inhabitants of that city that the Venetians were popularly known as Pantaloni. Consequently, among the commedia dell'arte's stock characters the representative Venetian (a stereotypically wealthy but miserly merchant) was called Pantalone, or Pantalon in French. In the mid-17th century the French came to identify him with one particular style of trousers, a style which became known as pantaloons in English. Pantaloons was later applied to another style that came into fashion in the late 18th century, tight-fitting garments that had begun to replace knee breeches. After that pantaloons was used to refer to trousers in general.

The abbreviation of pantaloons to pants met with some resistance at first; it was considered vulgar and, as Oliver Wendell Holmes put it, "a word not made for gentlemen, but 'gents.'" First found in the writings of Edgar Allan Poe in 1840, pants has replaced the "gentleman's word" in English and has lost all obvious connection to Saint Pantaleon."

Thank you America for disdaining our Trousers !...so Underpants seem to fit !...though I really like the term  'Undertousers'  does have a nice ring to it !......and of course ' chuddies' !:D:D
