heated saddle?
« on: 04/12/2005 22:37:16 »
yo.

im planning to make a heated saddle for my mountain bike, ive chosen this as it is fairly simple electronics, but still dont really know what to do.

basicly it wuld work howd youd expect, same a a car, ander the cloth of the saddle there would be a layer of metal strips that heat up, and then warm ya butt, i will be making this from scratch (except the saddle) so any advice would be great.

ideally id like to run it from a domino, same as you get with lights but i dont think this will be powerful eneugh, so probly reacharble batteries located beneath the saddle.

so would it work, how would i go about making such a thing?

thanks

I would just get someone else to sit on the saddle for 5 minutes first !!

Men are the same as women.... just inside out !!

I hope for your sake you get it right or "hot-pants" could take on a whole new meaning!

Two things which reduce male fertility are bicycle seats and exposing gonads to high temperatures:-

So the "heated bicycle seat" would be an effective contraceptive.

I would think that the amount of power you would need the dynamo to generate to drive the heater would get you pedalling fast enough that you simply would not need any other source of heat (you probably also would not have much power left to drive the bicycle forward).

Or even a heated sock, you can just slide it over the saddle and bingo! Not exactly cheap though! http://www.nauticalia.com/uk-info/clothing/accessories/battery-heated_gloves_&_socks/6497L.html

Of course, if this is to impress someone with your technical genius you could give it a few frills eg
 - put the sock under the saddle cover
 - link the rechargeable battery to a generator, as you originally suggested (need to check the output voltage/amperage of whatever recharger they use though, I couldn't find that on this site)
 - put in a simple thermal(bimetallic) switch so it only comes on when the saddle is cold!  This may also reduce the incidence of the unfortunate sterility side effect that Doc Beaver mentioned. Not sure where you would get one, maybe take an old iron or hair dryer apart and tweak the closure until you get the right temperature range?

well Lance Armstrong has been in the saddle every day for many years and he's got three kids produced from only one tezzie.

nowt' wrong with his fertility!

On our bikes everybody, we have nothing to lose but our chains!
