How does gravity escape a black hole?

Howard Thomas  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello,

If nothing can escape a black hole due to its gravity, how can gravity escape?  I seems to me that a black hole could not be detected until
you reached the event horizon!

I thought I understood black holes until I thought of this.

Please enlighten me,

Thank you,
Howard in New Jersey USA.

What do you think?

Gravity does not have to escape from the hole because the gravitational field is a property of space outside the event horizon this is caused by the mass that has gone inside the event horizon to create the size of the event horizon of the black hole. if there was not the gravitational field there could not be an event horizon because that is what causes the hole to exist.
