whats the best kind of box for my car's speakers
« on: 13/04/2010 02:08:56 »
I'm running 2 6x9's and a 12 inch subwoofer, but the sub isn't in a box which is killing my bass, and i need a way to fit the subwoofer and the 6x9's in the same box, i drive a 85 el camino, and the speakers are going behind the seat where the spare tire goes. i have 11" of height and about a meter of length, maybe a meter of depth to work with, and i want to have the box vented. I was told that a triangle box with a small opening in the side, and the sub about 2"from the ground pointing down with the 6x9's on one side pointing at the seats would be a good configuration, but a second opinion would be nice. Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Here's an idea.

If you happen pull up beside me at a stop light, I might turn on my audio dump circuit and vaporize your amps.

The proper mounting of speakers in boxes  and or cars to get a good frequency response is a very complex thing and most speaker enclosures are pretty terrible.  It depends if you want a smooth bass response that reproduces all frequencies evenly or one that just produces a satisfying resonant thump from a drum beat (Like most of the speaker fitted cars I have heard).

The design also depends a bit on what sort of crossover network you are using

I would not recommend mounting the stereo ellipticals in the same box as the woofer unless they were in separate enclosures because the pressure from the woofer will muck up (intermodulate) the frequency response of the main speakers.  you also need to think about how you get the high frequencies from the main speakers to your ears because the very highest cymbal clashes need a direct clear line from the speakers to your ears so these speakers should be near the front of the car.  It also depends a bit on the power of your amplifier.  most pepole use power boosters and a low efficiency solution is a good but if you are trying to get away with the amplifier in the car's own system it will probably need to be efficient.

The box for your woofer should be made out of as thick and as heavy material as is possible and be filled with something like duvet fibre to damp it down and I would recommend a pressure enclosure or a long piped port possibly  leading out of the car.

hope this helps.  I do not claim any expertise in car systems I have been most interested in proper high fi systems for listening to classical music.  For this it is amazing what a difference really good speakers can make and really good speakers are expensive!  i.e. more than £1000.
