Budi Prasetya asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Dr Chris,

If someone is able to run a cable or any other material connecting earth and moon, what is going to happen to the gravity between 2 mass bodies? Will they collapse? How the law of gravity explain this situation?

Thank you!

What do you think?

It will not make one iota of difference because the mass used to do the connection is likely relatively small, and even so would be distributed from earth to moon in some sort of proportion to how it is without the physical connection.

Space elevators. Yeah. The surface speed at the equator is 1,000 miles per hour. The speed at the upside of the synchronous elevator is going 24,000 miles per hour. Jee. Can I see a problem here?
