What happens if a worm is cut in half?
« on: 28/12/2005 19:10:11 »
I love worms....worms are great..they are the gardeners chum and they are friendly and harmless and burdies like to pull, stretch and eat them, many a time I have witnessed a happy birdy tugging on a happy wormy in a game of life or death tug-of-war. Such a sight brings joy to your heart on a winters morning.

I just want to get clarification once and for all. If you cut a worm in half (NOT Lengthways !) will it live ?...i presume, if it does, then the living part applies to one half.

If not in half, then what perecentage down the length is it ok to slice 'n'  dice !! ?

Does the living part grow back to full wormy length ?

As a firm believer in empirical study this is one experiment I am not prepared to do.

Do you really think the worm was happy about being tugged to its death?

TWO THINGS.
FIRSTLY NOT MANY WORMS AROUND FOR THE BIRDIE TO TUG ON IN THE WINTER,I DONT KNOW IF YOU NOTICED BUT THE GROUND GETS FROZEN IN THE WINTER AND BIRDIE WOULD SMASH HIS/HER FACE IN TRYING TO GET A SNACK.
SECONDLY,HOW CAN YOU SAY YOU LIKE WORMS ,THEN IN THE NEXT BREATH (IM ASSUMING HERE YOU DIDNT GO FOR A CUPPA/PINT/DUMP AT THIS POINT )ENCOURAGE THE AFOREMENTIONED WORMS TO BE DISEMBOWELED,DISECTED AND OTHERWISE ABUSED, WE MUST LOVE AND CARE FOR OUR LITTLE GARDEN FRIENDS, AND NOT ENCOURAGE THEIR DESCIMATION

The first one-third of the earthworm's body contains its vital organs. If it loses a small part of its tail, it will most likely live and regenerate a new tail. So you will have one alive worm and one piece of dead worm. However, a worm cut too close to its head will almost certainly die. So please don't do it. It's not pleasant. Worms are very sensitive creatures.

In my youth I used to dig for worms to go fishing and noted that some worms (particularly the big ones) when you got hold of them would actually break themselves in half and leave a violently wriggling tail while the head end slunk away.  A trick a bit like lizards.

Well thank you all for all the replies.

I of course do not take pleasure in tearing worms in half..I love worms, they are our friends.:)

Thanks Dr Phil for the biology.

Ian..that's fascinating that is. I didn't realise worms did that. It's geckos  which also allow their tails to break isn't it ?...I wonder if all lizards share that capapbility !

Ray...I have noticed that it's winter...and I was only being cheeky about harming our wormy friends.:)

In my defense I am always the one who picks up stranded worms and places them back on some shaded earth. I hate to see the ones near death on the pavement/sidewalk in the summer all dehydrated.:(

THE ONLY CREATURE IVE PICKED UP THAT HAS DROPPED ITS TAIL IS A SLOWORM,FOR THOSE LESS FORTUNATES,WHO LIVE OUTSIDE OUR WONDERFUL ISLAND,A SLOWORM IS A SMALL LEGLESS LIZARD,
IT STILL SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME NOW,I DONT KNOW WHY.
AS FOR GARDEN WORMS I LOVE THEM SO MUCH THAT I LET THEM RESIDE IN MY NICE WARM TUMMY WHEN I WAS A CHILD.

A dry earthworm is a dead earthworm.

Quote from my 8th grade bio teacher Dave Sheridan

I don't get to quote that often so I jumped at the chance! :-)

is there a method to finding out which side of the worm the head is and which side the tail is?

I dont know which worm species you are talking about but our Red Wrigglers die if cut in half, 3/4 or any proportion at all.
