Do moles have (visible) ears?
« on: 07/06/2010 16:05:20 »
I know this is a fairly odd question (although not overly compared to other questions I've seen on here if I may say so myself) but I was wondering if moles ears were actually visible at all? I've read different sources explaining that they do have ears and can hear but when it comes to actually SEEING their ears it seems people are torn.

The reason I ask is because I'm working on an animated adaptation of The Wind and the Willows and I need to have a fairly accurate ideas of what moles look like!

Many thanks,

Dane

According to this source the European mole is lugless ...

Ears: no pinna (external ear)

Wikipedia entry says a vestigial structure exists ...

... the ears are just small ridges in the skin.

Some potentially useless information regarding moles (and worms)

Thanks for looking that up guys. As I say people seem to be torn on the issue - this article about newbielink:http://www.hygienesuppliesdirect.com/blog/pest_control/?p=86 [nonactive] insists that they 'do not extrude from the body at all' and 'cannot generally be seen because of the fur'. Perhaps the visibility of a mole's ears is subjective to the species?

Either way I shall probably give the ears a miss as the majority seem to think they're none-existant / too small to see.

Thanks again!

This is nearest I can find to a bald mole (to see what its ears look like) :  a naked mole rat ...

No external ears, (it has ear'oles though), and its eyes are permanently covered with skin,
[one for the proponents of "intelligent design"  :) ].
