New umbrella
« on: 04/01/2006 14:21:43 »
Chap I know was taking a degree in Product Design & Management at Bucks uni in High Wycombe. For his final year project he had to re-design something to make it better. He chose an umbrella.
His motive was that there are too many small parts in an umbrella that can break. So, he designed 1 with only 3 spokes. It was actually very clever. It worked well and was much sturdier than a normal brolly.
As it was stronger he decided to make it bigger so that it came down to completely cover the shoulders as well as the head. He used transparent material for visibility.
However, when he tried it out on a cold day, his breath caused the inside to mist up, thus making it impossible to see through. His solution? He cut holes in it so the air could circulate! He didn't get his degree [V]

Surely if he had cut holes in his field of view on the vertical then that would have served the purpose of no misting and still keeping the rain out.

Why did he fail his degree ?..did he punch holes in the top of it ?

Not much use if the rain's blowing towards you, though. He failed his degree because he's an idiot who'd rather get stoned than study.

I don't understand why he didn't simply fit a double-glazed panel in the front. I'm sure Everest would have cut him a good deal.

Hee hee !!..it would make for a good sketch.:D

I have always thought that umbrellas are too busy under the canopy and the three spoked version sounds like a clever way to go. I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't been thought of before though.

The current version is an antiquated design though, that of course doesn't mean that it has run it's course as a useful design, but it stands to reason that it should benefit from a new, more reliable less wind-breakable concept.

Doc
I take it when you took your degree their were no modern man made fabrics:), otherwise your friend would have used a modern breathable waterproof fabric to go over the holes.
