Jim Peters  asked the Naked Scientists:

Chris, I was catching up on your podcasts and wondered about the significance of some of the numbers I heard.

In the study relating dental hygiene to heart attacks, I thought I heard that the study originally included 12000 people in Scotland, but that they had to eliminate 3000 because they had no teeth.

Is it reasonable to infer that one fourth of the residents in Scotland have no teeth?

What do you think?

The Scots even have their own word for false teeth : "wallies" ...

Quote
Wallies  Teeth e.g. "Ah'll stoat yer wallies" (I'll punch you in the teeth)

[The example phrase given may help explain the reason behind their lack of real teeth  :) ].
