What went wrong with the ICE trains?
« on: 11/07/2010 19:31:54 »
From AP:

BERLIN – A grueling heat wave shut down the air conditioning in three high-tech trains in Germany, leaving dozens of passengers near collapse trapped in temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), authorities said Sunday.

At least 52 people needed medical treatment and about 1,000 people had to switch trains, the national railway system, Deutsche Bahn, said.

All three modern ICE trains — whose windows do not open — were headed..........

....................

Maybe they should change the name  ;D

British trains sometimes don't go because of the "wrong snow". Apparently, German trains don't like the "wrong heat".

All three modern ICE trains — whose windows do not open

People do stick their arms and heads out of train windows.

So maybe the sealed windows idea is a safety feature,

That's very true. Also, at the speeds they travel at, open windows create lots of turbulence and nasty pressure effects when passing other trains, or going through tunnels, so it's not really an option.

However, they might want to think about some sort of emergency backup that allows them to ventilate the train with outside air. They would have to run the train at much lower speed when using it of course, but that would be preferable to cooking the passengers.

Those sorts of temperatures in still, and probably very humid air, might be lethal. I think it's fortunate that nobody succumbed.
