The vast majority of physical resources that sustain our high technology society are derived from rocks - whether interstitially such as oil and gas or directly such as metals.

By understanding geologic processes, which occur all around us, we can also prepare for potential geologic hazards, like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, sinkholes, floods, etc.

Can the rocks hold up buildings?  dams?  bridges?  roadways?  Where do I find water?  What was past like?  How do ice ages affect the earth?  What is the record of life?  Have the oceans been constant?  Asteroid impacts?  Where do we get chemicals?  Can rocks break? bend? flow?  Do the poles wander?  These and countless other questions require the study of geology.
