KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Osama bin Laden is "probably" dead, but former Taliban leader Mullah Omar is alive, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said.   "I would come to believe that [bin Laden] probably is dead," Karzai said on CNN's "Late Edition" on Sunday.   "But still, you never know. He might be alive. Five months ago, six months ago, I was thinking that he was alive.   "The more we don't hear of him, and the more time passes, there is the likelihood that he probably is either dead or seriously wounded somewhere."

Israeli intelligence: Bin Laden is dead, heir has been chosen   TEL AVIV -- Osama Bin Laden appears to be dead but his colleagues have decided that Al Qaida and its insurgency campaign against the United States will continue, Israeli intelligence sources said.   The Israeli sources said Israel and the United States assess that Bin Laden probably died in the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan in December. They said the emergence of new messages by Bin Laden are probably fabrications, Middle East Newsline reported.

 al-Wafd, Wednesday, December 26, 2001 Vol 15 No 4633

News of Bin Laden's Death  and Funeral 10 days ago

Islamabad -   A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement announced yesterday the death of Osama bin Laden, the chief of al-Qa'da organization, stating that binLaden suffered serious complications in the lungs and died a natural and quiet death.   The official, who asked to remain anonymous, stated to The Observer of Pakistan that he had himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial in Tora Bora 10 days ago. He mentioned that 30 of al-Qa'da fighters attended the burial as well as members of his family and some friends from the Taleban. In the farewell ceremony to his final rest guns were fired in the air.   The official stated that it is difficult to pinpoint the burial location of bin Laden because according to the Wahhabi tradition no mark is left by the grave. He stressed that it is unlikely that the American forces would ever uncover any traces of bin Laden.

That's not exactly news. There was an SAS guy on TV a couple of years ago who said he could assure people that Bin Laden was dead.

God - I'm not surprised. I think TNS has been very tolerant towards him/her.
Although, having said that, it has caused me some amusement; especially when I did my spoof site.

Al-Zarqawi probably died in February/March 2004

Al-Zarqawi

 «Iraq militants claim al-Zarqawi is dead»

«Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in the Sulaimaniyah mountains of northern Iraq, during the American bombing there, according to a statement circulated in Fallujah this week and signed by the Leadership of the Allahu Akbar Mujahedeen.   There was no way to verify the authenticity of the statement, one of many leaflets put out by a variety of groups taking part in the anti-U.S. resistance.»

«It said al-Zarqawi was unable to escape the bombing because of his artificial leg.»

AMMAN, Jordan (CNN)

quote:

«One man, his face contorted with rage, yelled out that the Israelis and Americans were behind the attacks on the hotels, that al-Zarqawi was a religious man.   He recounted how al-Zarqawi had once rescued a dog from some young men in the neighborhood who were abusing the animal. His implication was that such a man could not have committed terrorist acts.»

So they think bin laden is alive because of a voice recording. What rubbish, bin laden is dead and has been for a long time .
A voice recording is the easiest thing to fake, all you would need is a collection of previous recordings and a pc.
I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA made the tape themselves. Think about it,if America killed bin laden a few years back and then his number two the other day, then there fight against terror and more importantly the funding for it would be jeopardy, in order to keep that funding in place they require a figurehead like bin laden and the best figure head is a dead one who we think is alive.

The new tape could be made by CIA or Pentagon. It is just an audiotape, not a videotape. But it is interesting to see how the media cover it, like if it is Osama bin Laden.

CAIRO, Egypt -     Osama bin Laden warned in an audiotape aired Thursday that his fighters are preparing new attacks in the United States but offered the American people a "long-term truce" without specifying the conditions.

Det er ennå ikke bekreftet at tapen er autentisk, men stemmen er svært lik stemmen på tidligere taper der al Qaida-lederen har uttalt seg, melder AP.

My translation: "It is not yet confirmed that the tape is authentic, but the voice seem very similar to the voice on earlier tapes where the Al-Qaida leader has expressed himself, reports AP" .

I dont know which tapes they refer to. Maybe they refer to earlier fake audiotapes made by CIA, Pentagon or somebody else.

Here is an article about an earlier audiotape alleged to be from Osama bin Laden. Some swiss experts concluded it was not Osama bin Laden on the tape.

Swiss scientists 95% sure that Bin Laden recording was fake

Scientists in Switzerland say they are almost certain that a recent audio tape attributed to Osama bin Laden is a fake.

The tape, delivered to the Arab satellite television channel al-Jazeera earlier this month, appeared to provide the first concrete evidence that Bin Laden is still alive because it mentioned recent attacks on western targets.

American experts initially concluded that the voice on the tape was probably Bin Laden, though it is unlikely ever to be fully authenticated because of the recording's poor quality.

Oh please, let's take a break from this nonsense. Ossama Bin Laden is dead, huh? Don't you think George Bush would be a bit eager to prove that if he could? There must be dozens of experts examining every frame of every video and charting every second of every audiotape. If there were any proof that imposters are being employed, do you not think we would have been informed by now?

You conspiracy theorists are a crime against Occam's razor. I suppose that you will now tell me that Lee Harvey Oswald was framed and the John F Kennedy assassin was a disgruntled boyfriend of Marilyn Monroe. What you fail to understand is that humans are basically stupid, and therefore do things that seem odd. That statement applies to Ossama and to George, by the way.

Not sure he would be that eager.  How would he be able to continue to justify his was on terror if his main antagonist is dead.  He might even have to admit that in killing one terrorist he has created hundreds more.  It's much neater for him to claim he has one mega terrorist that requires extreme measures to combat.

Ofcourse, none of this is to say that I believe Osama Bin Laden is dead, only that his remaining alive is actually quite convenient for Bush's policy.

If it was publicly known that he was dead, he'd be a martyr & that's the last thing the west needs. Imagine how much more intense the attacks would be.
If I was George Bush I'd make damned sure no-one ever knew that he'd been killed. Either that, or he's in somewhere like area 51.
As for the possibility of the tapes being faked, I've got enough sound manipulation software myself to make a pretty good effort at that if I had sufficient source material.
