Breathable liquid !

In the film ' abyss ' Ed Harris (and a rat) breathe in some happy highly oxygenated liquid...is this stuff really used for deep sea divers ?

Is in use at all ?...what is it exactly and does it have other uses ?

I dont know any real details but yes divers can use it i think,  its called Perfluorocarbon

Couldnt imagine breathing in a fluid
