Why don't steering wheels go the other way?
« on: 21/09/2010 21:13:38 »
Steering wheels always seem to work in the same direction, but why is that? Wouldn't they work just as well if they turned in the opposite direction?

Do you mean that, when you turn the wheel to the left, the car will go to the right and vice versa?  I am not quite sure that I understand the question.  Thanks for comments.  Joe L. Ogan

An interesting question.  Boat tillers do work the other way around, at least insofar as you put the tiller over to the right to steer left, but that's because the pivot is between the rudder and the tiller, so although you put the tiller to the right the rudder will swing to the left.

I once saw someone at a festival who had several 'trick' bicycles for people to have a try on and one of them had reversed steering, so when you turned the handlebars to the right the front wheel turned to the left.  Needless to say that the only person who could ride it was the entertainer who had brought the bikes.

But when you turn the wheel in any direction, half of it goes to the right, and half of it goes to the left.

Not only that!!  Half is also going up while the other half is going down, which gives us four halves, so exactly which one of the two steering wheels are you referring to?

That would be the one on Mrs G's right. No, her other right.

The old phrase "righty tighty, lefty loosy" used to confused me to no end for the same reason!

I had a bit of trouble learning my right from my left too. When I was a kid I had to visualize myself sitting at the kitchen table holding my knife and fork!

You're surely pulling my leg.  Cutlery wasn't invented until around the 2nd century AD!

The simple answer is that clockwise is right and anticlockwise (US = counterclockwise) is wrong left.

Actually, in past times, ships wheels were not universally clockwise = right. It is only a matter of convention.

I think Graham is right. It "seems" more logical that clockwise means turn right, but that might just be because we are conditioned to think that way.

Some early automobiles used tillers, but I'm not sure whether they were set up for clockwise turns right or not.

Wow! Here's a coincidence. This just turned up in the news.

"Crucially, one system meant turning the wheel one way and the other in completely the opposite direction."

I am beginning to think that we need a Steering Committy to discuss this topic and perhaps make recommendations.  I believe we should avoid the Steering Committy that made recommendations for the Titanic.  Thanks for comments.  Joe L. Ogan
