How do I record video of my computer screen?
« on: 03/10/2010 10:00:23 »
Can anyone recommend a reasonable - free - screen video capture tool. I am looking for something that will enable me to capture either all or part of my screen in real-time so that I can make some educational video sequences e.g. showing people how to use a particular program.

Thanks for your advice.

Chris

You could try some of the solutions from this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screencasting_software

Having a multiple core processor and lots of ram helps (you really need a core to run the video software and then another to run the screen capture prog, and you want lots of ram to buffer the screen data).

If your screen recorder doesn't have "zoom-in" here is free windows software which does that ...

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897434.aspx

(it's from Sysinternals which was taken over by Microsoft so it’s legit)

Alternatively in Windows you could use the screen magnifier in "accessories", (see "ease of access") to zoom in ...

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/windowsvista/magnifier.aspx

IMO the Sysinternals magnifier is better :
easier to use and was designed for presentation, e.g. it allows drawing on the zoomed image ...

I’ve had a go with the free version of the Blueberry (no relation) screen recorder downloded from here , combined with the Sysinternals zoom, and I think the results are quite good.

You can download my test here (7.5Mb  windows wmv format video).
I downgraded the audio and video resolution and frame rate to reduce the size of the file, (1min 15 sec duration , 7.5Mb in wmv format).

This software did repeatedly attempt to access the internet, but as with all freebee software I blocked it with the firewall.

A separate programme downloads with the free Blueberry screen recorder to monitor its performance and attempts* to send a report back, i.e. I suspect the free users are unwitting “beta testers” , (aka guinea pigs).

I only used this freebee for ten minutes but it worked like a charm, (only problem I noticed was the audio did glitch a bit when I zoomed in or out). The paid for versions have extra features, but evidently the free version is perfectly usable : not crippleware.

[* not in my case coz of the Firewall].

[I ran the free Blueberry screen recorder on Windows Vista, in Acronis virtual mode, Pentium dual core processor]

There is a free piece of software called Cam Studio http://camstudio.org/ that you can use to record your desktop. I'm not sure if it can capture sound though.

According to wikipedia it does ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screencasting_software#Comparison_by_features

BTW the free Blueberry product I tested above does come with an editor (time-line thingy) for post-production.

Hopefully Chris got the answer he was looking for.

As this thread has turned into a spam magnet (bet you didn't know spam is magnetic) it's time to lock it.
