Bridget Wall  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello!

I've tried searching online in scientific papers and in the forums for this, but why do some people love the smell of permanent markers, gasoline, and related organics?

Since they aren't really all that good for us, what's the evolutionary reason for us loving these smells?  It just doesn't make sense to me!   (scents to me?  oh goodness)

Thanks!

Bridget

What do you think?

Gasoline, when inhaled fiercely, has an effect on the nervous system, massaging it, giving a person a feeling of euphoria.
