What causes twitching muscles?

Engela Lord  asked the Naked Scientists:
Good day

I am looking for the cause and treatment possibilities to muscles that just twitch (jump) constantly. My daughter has at any time of day a muscle that will jump and then stop but this roams around the body.

Her one lumbrical in her foot jumped like that for over a year and a half without stopping until we had botox injected recently. What causes this? What can we do about it?

I have taken her to doctors, spoken to neurologist's and nutritionists  but no-one seems to have an answer. We did give her calmag which made it worse and potassium reduced it somewhat but did not take it away altogether.

She is an Educational Psychology student and this is particularly irritating when she has to study or do reading.

I always listen in on Redi's show on 702 and am desperate to find an answer please can you perhaps help me here. I am just worried that it is some kind of muscular disease and don't just want to leave it.

Thank you so much

What do you think?
