Kettle Boiling Versus Water Paying Quandary
« on: 06/02/2006 20:08:12 »
Wifey just over filled our kettle. It's a 3kw kettle and she filled it with two pints when only one pint is needed.

What I need to know is , is it more energy efficient to discard the extra one pint so that the kettle boils quicker, and therefore using less energy (and saving money too) or is that counteracted against the cost of the water I'm pouring down the sink...we're on a water meter.

I know what you're going to ask me, and that is for the rates I'm charged for electricity and water aren't you ?...well I can't get those figures right now so I asume I've just wasted this post....and I need my coffee .....

It takes 4.2kJ to warm up a litre a degree C, so you will use .42MJ to warm it up which is about .1kWh so about .6-.8p (depending on cost of electricity these days).

water is about 90p/1000l according to Thames Water, so the water will cost about .1p

so poaring water down the sink is definitely cheaper, and better for the environment.

why not pour excess water into a jug and use later?

Surely one must take into account when one will next use the kettle. If it is likely that shortly after boiling it, a coffee will be required, then keeping the hot water in the kettle means it will boil that much quicker next time, thus saving on the cost of electricity.
