Not forgetting Alan Turing of the very first electronic computer,
the Colossus and he was also involved with Bletchley Park's
Enigma Machine for breaking the german codes then plus loads
of other brilliant mathematicians.

The first public 'Internet' was France's Minitel from 1982.

Tommy Flowers devised Colossus at Bletchley.

This is one of those things where the last step looks more impressive because that is the one which transforms the situation. It is like when the football player scores to make it 3-2 in the final minute. He is treated as a hero but without the other two goals his achievement would be nothing. He no more won the match than the other two guys, or indeed the left back who blocked a few shots on goal.

In the case of the internet it was a gradual evolution over many years by many people, with packet switching and routing which didn't rely on predetermined paths being vital to the nature of the internet. The web browser is "the icing on the cake" and a mighty fine thing but hardly qualifies as the invention of the internet.
