Can we have 'safe' cigarettes?
« on: 04/11/2010 11:31:56 »
Low alcohol and alcohol free beers and wines have been around for many years.

As for cigarettes there are 'Capstan' with Tar 10mg, Nicotine 0.9mg, Carbon Monoxide 7mg. The smokers equivalent of a strong alcoholic drink and there are 'Silk Cut' Tar 1mg, Nicotine 0.1mg, Carbon Monoxide 1mg. The smokers equivalent of a weak larger.

Leaving aside the fact that it would be detrimental to the tobacco industry, would it be possible to produce a tar, nicotine and CO free cigarette? Would it be possible to use some other leaf, wood pulp or whatever to manufacture non addictive cigarettes? Perhaps even a beneficial fag?

Could we have a 'shisha' type cigarette (without the need for a Hookah)?

What do you think?

Many roles that require actors to smoke use a herbal cigarette they use a standard paper and filter, but the content are herbs (tobacco and nicotine free).

However I think that the inhalants are still going to be detrimental to your lungs.

And I bet that more investigation has been done into the tobacco sort of cigarettes - wouldn't surprise me in the least that the herbal alternatives have some potentially brutal effects, but they are unregulated because they are herbs!

People smoke tobacco because they are chemically dependent on the nicotine they supply.

So nicotine free ciggies would not be popular, (like Kaliber lager).

I think the nicotine addiction rules. So a gasper sans nicotine is, as we Yanks have it, a bit like kissing your sister. (That is assuming you have as sister. If you don't you'll have to make do with your Auntie Mabel.)

I'm a reformed smoker myself, and, on one of the many occasions when I was trying to kick the habit, I had the idea that I could taper down by smoking some "ultra low tar" ciggies. I bought a pack and tried a couple. Nothing! Total waste of time, so I threw them in my desk drawer and bought something a lot stronger.

One night, when I had run out, in desperation I dug the pack out of my drawer. I reamed the filter with a screwdriver and discovered that they actually had the desired amount of nicotine after all.

"Can we have 'safe' cigarettes?"
Yes, reasonably safe as long as we don't smoke them.
It's not just the nicotine that's bad for you . All that tar is what causes the cancer.
OK, so even nicotine free smokes would be bad for you.
What about smoke free nicotine- patches, gum etc.
Well, still not I'm afraid.
Nicotine is bad for you too.

An absolute solute, the safest way, your right on, Bored Chemist.
For many it is a life's chore to quit.
Outside the scenario of that moment close to seeing our maker and getting a second chance.
The scientific population is always devising and attempting alternatives, to help make the world (cough, cough) a
 better place.

For instance the alternate to petrol automobile with zero emissions is the Tesla electric car.
They also have an alternate to tobacco cigarettes, the electronic cigarette.
They also developed a High Test and regular free... (nicotine or negate-tine)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette

Then there is Cheech and Chong's, Up in Smoke
