Why is February so short?

Rodney Turcotte  asked the Naked Scientists:

Active podcast listeners from Canada with a question about the calendar:

Why is it that February is such a short month with 28 days?

Would it have been possible for January and March to lend a day each to bring February up to 30 days?

Thanks.

The Turcottes

What do you think?

I blame the banks, they wanted too much interest on the loan.

Of course being a short month, it does mean that payday comes around that little bit earlier. Unfortunately, it also means that the monthly bills come in that little bit earlier too.

Can you imagine the complaints from January and March when, in a leap year, February ends up with one more day than both of them?

As you can tell from this load of absolute tosh, I have no idea. Nothing new there.

It's because the weather is so flipping horrible in February. They wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible.

January and February were added last to the Roman calendar and it appears February got the short straw.

He's right you know. Things would be a lot simpler if we just had 13 months with 28 days each. The extra day could be throwaway holiday that didn't even have a date. (Two every four years!)

The nice thing about this would be that your birthday would always fall on the same day of the week, as would the last day of each month. Calanders could be recycled indefinitely. Yes, yes - this has real possibilities.

So, which month would be the "unlucky" month?

What about Friday the 13th of the 13th month?

I never thought about it...  13*28 = 364.  1¼ extra days, and the months would make some real sense.

The other option would be to make them 27 1/3 days long.

Then you could have real lunar moonths.  But, unfortunately, it wouldn't line up with the earth's orbital period.

The ancient Egyptian calender was based on the phases of the moon. The year was split into 3 seasons which were in line with the phases of the Nile. Each season was made up of 4 months of 30 days each. This gave them a 360 day year. At the beginning of each year there were 5 days which belonged to the gods.

He's a she

and the significance of the 'unlucky' 13 is really only prominent in some cultures. Others couldn't care less about 13 but will shun 4. So when the 13th month rolls around you can move to China. :)
