artificial sweeteners
« on: 21/02/2006 02:06:37 »
so, I am curious...
What is the difference between the different artificial sweeteners?
y'know- the yellow (splenda), pink (sweet'n low), and blue (equal) packets you see on tables in diners next to the white sugar ones!
and...how do they make splenda calorie free when it is made from sugar?

yay...thought I'd mention thanks for mentioning my question on the radio
I've been forcing every person I know to listen to that episode so they can hear my name!
albeit...chris, you called me "he"  [}:)]
 I am a she! but that's o.k. [^]

Equal is made with Aspartame (the stuff in diet coke), Sweet n Low is made with saccharine (I believe this is the one that is unhealthy, possibly a carcinogen) and Splenda is made with sucralose.

thanks for that info---i went back to google to search sucralose & splenda
hmm...i got so close..but then... :(

How is SPLENDAŽ Brand Sweetener made?
SPLENDAŽ is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made by a patented multi-step process that starts with cane sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener.

aaaahhhh....what is the multi-step process!!!?????!!![?]

According to this:
http://www.wholefoods.com/healthinfo/sucralose.html
Sucralose is made by replacing some of the OH groups in sugar with chlorine atoms. These stop the molecule being used by your body for energy.

Most sweeteners work by making the molecule stick better to the sweetness receptors than sugar so one molecule will produce the same signal as several hundred sugar molecules - hence why they are so much more sweet.
