How do you think the Earth will end?

Please share with us your view and provide your explanation. Is it most likely to end because of the 'Big Crucnch'. Thanks.

The earth will end when the sun becomes a red giant and fries us  [8D]

I agree Magnus but life will go a little before the planet is really fried by the expanding sun in about 5 thousand million years.  The sun is slowly getting brighter as the hydrogen is "burnt" to Helium in its core this will probably result in a runaway greenhouse effect in around one thousand million years which would turn the earth into a planet a bit like Venus is now.

Although no doubt all life will be extinguished I believe the Earth will survive as a planet, no doubt as the Sun evolves to a white dwarf stage of slightly lower mass it will then move closer but what will be its ultimate fate I do not know.

The sun will lose a significant amount of mass when it becomes a red giant and expels a planetary nebula. This will cause the Earth to spiral out into a slightly larger orbit. It is not known if this will prevent it from being engulfed by the sun and destroyed as a result, it will be a close-run thing.

All the insides will come out through volcanic activity and the earth will implode.

Ok only joking

I'm going to go with the 5 billion years date.

I've seen the predictions that the sun is gradually warming.
Along with a number of charts indicating that the earth has been cooling over the last half billion years or so.

Assuming humanity, or some advanced civilization remains on earth into the distant future, I have no doubt that there will be advanced space engineering techniques to protect the planet from too much warming or too much cooling.

These should be effective right up until the sun enters the final read giant phase.

Even if we do have interstellar transport capabilities in the future, it is unlikely we will be able to evacuate the entire solar system. Thus, even as the sun dies, there will be efforts to preserve life and humanity in the solar system.

Yeah, but we all know the zombie apocalypse happens first.

Might be more of a 'fizz bang' in this case.

I read some years ago that this solar system will pass through a giant dust cloud in about 50,000 years.  That will kill most larger life.  Is this true?

We have to get past December 21st 2012 before we start worrying about Solar evolution.

Why December 21st 2012? Someone's predictions? Or predictions from a movie?

Syprum is referring (rather tongue in cheek, I'll  wager) to this or any of a whole host of similar lunatic predictions.

I think it will eventually evaporate along with the rest of the Universe.

A rather sad prospect, but you could well be right.

On a happier note, I think it's certain that quite a few very nasty events will seriously bugger things up long before that happens.

If the entire solar system is going to be inundated with dust...  perhaps I don't have to worry about dusting my house   ;D

I already mentioned predictions that our sun may die a fiery death in about 5 billion years which could send humanity scurrying to the outer reaches of the solar system, then back to very close to the dying sun.

There are additional predictions that the Milky Way may collide with Andromeda in about 3-5 billion years.  While collisions with small galaxies are common, the collision with Andromeda could cause massive disturbances in the stellar systems in both galaxies.

It's still nice to see someone worrying for the Earth, instead of just us humans:)
