Hi, while hiking up in the San Gabriel Mts. in southern California near Los Angeles, I found a rock which I thought to be a piece of iron ore with some crystal like rocks sandwiched inside. I took it home and decided to break it open with a hammer to see if there was anything of interest inside. It crumbled quite easily. And inside I found some shiny metallic mineral. If you could help me to identify it, I'd be very grateful!

likely pyrite.  the orange-brown is iron oxide (commonly called limonite).
