Josie asked the Naked Scientists:
Dear Naked Scientists,  I have often considered donating part or all of my body to science on my death.  However, I do not know how this 'fits' with having an 'open casket' for viewing the body before the funeral.

Please could you enlighten me?

Thanks - Josie

What do you think?

The medical school will want to get the body as soon as possible after death so that they can use the venous system to inject preservatives into the body.

I don't believe they allow open coffin services.  However, you may wish to discuss it with the school.  After the dissection, the bodies, along with all "parts" are cremated and the ashes are returned to the family.
