What's this crazy bone?!
« on: 29/01/2011 03:02:50 »
A friend found this on a beach (south-east coast of Australia). It is 10cm long and solid (not like a bone from a bird). Lots of tiny foraminae as well as a central, larger passage. Any ideas anyone?

How solid is the bone?
In particular, the lump on top in the 2nd photo, or near the ruler on the 3rd photo?
Is it hollow (without bony structures inside).

It looks like you have a lot of detail.  However, you said that it was found on a beach.

Also, what about joint articulations?  Is that a joint to the left side of the first photo?

Others?

That lump (???sagittal crest???) is completely solid. The whole thing feels quite weighty - not like something from a bird or fish. I'm also leaning away from skull because it doesn't have anything resembling orbits...

To the left of the first photo is a complex part of the bone with numerous small plates. It's hard to be sure but it may articulate with something in that direction at a small facet of less than 1cm which is adjacent to the channel that runs from left to right through that complex portion. This would make the left side of the first photo the ??vertebral column?? and the right a ??beak-like?? protruberance.

Again - I'm not convinced it is a skull, though. I should also say that it is definitely intact.
