Dragon Age: Origins wont start
« on: 01/02/2011 07:19:08 »
Hello,

On my recently built computer I decided to play Dragon Age: Origins.  However, I put the cd in and I can hear the dvd drive start up and try to read it... and that's it.  I then tried to open it through 'my computer' but it is as if the cd weren't even in or it doesn't resognise that it's in.

I then decided to see if Mass Effect worked as it is Bioware again, and it works fine.  It's just Dragon Age it doesn't seem to like very much.  It works fine though however on my laptop.

Any ideas why it's doing this?  I can't patch it either because I can't even install it.

Any help would be greatly appreiciated.  I know this isn't rally very sciencey related but I'm hoping someone here may be able to help anyway.  It's still geeky :)

Thanks,

Daerana

If it's a Windows system there is a free diagnostic / repair program from Microsoft which covers when the computer does not recognise that a disc has been inserted or that a DVD drive is attached ...

Quote
Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media
Automatically diagnose and repair problems with your CD or DVD drive when trying to read or burn media.

What it fixes...
Your CD or DVD Drive does not read or write and is shown as disabled
The media in your CD or DVD drive cannot be read
The media cannot be written to by your CD or DVD drive
You receive one of the following errors:
A class specific or device specific driver is missing or corrupt
A CD or DVD drive cannot be found or is not connected
The CD or DVD drive is experiencing a problem that prevents it from working properly
The CD or DVD drive is not accessible via an assigned drive letter

Firstly, this is not spam.  Secondly, unfortunatley on the computer I'm having the issues with doesn't have internet access at the moment (I'm currently using my laptop) and I saw that to use that program it needs to be connected to the internet.  However, as soon as I fix that I'll try it.

Thanks for your help (even if you accuse of such things as spam!  ;) That's good of you though to be googling it to see if it's been posted in other forums though.  I'm just a member of a few and when I have a computer issue I post it on a few forums to get different ideas of what people think the probem is.)

If the problem is disc specific, (i.e. all other discs can be read), try cleaning the disc.

If the problem is only with one computer, i.e. drive specific, (particularly if read fault is intermittent),  a DVD lens cleaner disc may be worth a try.

If you're getting a no-disc error, you may need to clean the DVD player's laser pickup [lens].

IMO you shouldn't take the drive apart to clean it , just try one of these cleaner discs... http://www.amazon.com/Allsop-23321-Carbon-Edge-CD-Drive-Cleaner/dp/B00000J1QM

There are two things I would try, exchange the DVD drive on which it runs OK into the computer where it fails to run and/or copy the DVD contents into a file and then run that file on the problem computer.
If a different DVD drive runs OK consider a new purchase when funds permit.
